What is sustainable seafood?
Seafood is sustainable if it comes from a fishery with practices that can be maintained indefinitely without reducing the target species. With the ability to maintain its population and without adversely impacting on other species within the ecosystem by removing their food source, accidentally killing them, or damaging their physical environment.
Our commitment to sustainability:
Responsible sourcing is of increasing importance in the UK fish industry. So with seafood demand and consumption growing, we all have to look at ways of protecting the world’s natural reserves.
S&J Shellfish are totally committed to responsible sourcing and supply of the world’s catch from well-managed and sustainable fisheries. We always source products within UK and International regulatory guidelines.
Being a London based company we have direct access to Billingsgate fish market. Billingsgate is the capitals only fish market and has been based at Trafalgar Way E14 since 1982. Steve is the market buyer with over 40 years of buying experience. Throughout this time, valuable relationships have been built with the market traders, enabling Steve to secure the lowest rates. These savings enable S&J Shellfish to offer their customers the best quality seafood at the best possible price. A familiar face, the market traders often joke that Steve “opens the market” due to his enthusiasm for arriving so early.
Throughout the early 1980s, whilst living In Cornwall, Steve also made many contacts with local fisherman and market traders, many of which are used by the company today to source local seafood such as Crab, Lobster, Dover Sole, Monkfish and Cod to name just a few.
